The most common type of dental emergency is acute or persistent tooth pain. This is usually caused by tooth decay that penetrates the core of the tooth, called the pulp, causing infection. Sometimes the intense discomfort from this type of emergency can be alleviated by performing root canal therapy. Other times, the discomfort may be caused by a loose filling or sensitive tooth. The only way to know for sure what might be causing your tooth pain is to make an appointment at the dental office right away.
Other types of dental emergencies include trauma to the teeth as a result of an accident. Teeth that break or become loose may have a better outcome if treated sooner than later. Also, gum swelling around a tooth may turn out to be an abscess that is better served with immediate attention, rather than letting it alone and risking spread of infection.
