What Is Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)?
Routine dental cleanings are performed every six months. During these treatments, the teeth are cleaned to remove plaque and tartar and examined to check for potential issues such as tooth decay or gum disease.
Dental biofilm management takes dental cleanings to a new level by allowing us to clean patients’ teeth without sharp hand instruments. Hygiene appointments can be performed in a more comfortable, faster manner.
During the routine teeth cleaning, your dental hygienist gently applies a stream of warm water. This removes the dental biofilm above and below the gum line. The therapy helps remove food particles, dental plaque, and stains and produces an immediately brighter smile.

What to Expect
During your dental appointment, we examine your mouth for areas of concern. We apply a colored dye to see where dental biofilm is present on the teeth. The biofilm is then removed using the AirFlow Prophy Master system.
During the cleansing treatment, you may feel a light sensation from the air and warmed water of this system. Generally, GBT provides a deeper clean that is precise and comfortable.
Although this therapy greatly reduces the need for hand instruments, if there is old, hard tartar present on the teeth, these instruments may still be required.
